The Real Cost of Saving Lives: Inside Malaysia's Animal Shelters
Share
Beyond the cute photos on social media lies a reality of sacrifice, survival, and a desperate need for community support.
Most people see animal shelters through a lens of "happy endings" a rescued puppy finding a home or a cat recovering from an injury. But behind the gates of shelters across Malaysia, like New Life Animal Shelter (NLAS), there is a story that rarely makes it to the headlines.

1. The Myth of "Government Funding"
Many Malaysians believe that animal shelters are government-supported or fully funded by large corporations. The truth? Most shelters survive entirely on the "extra" ringgit from kind individuals. At NLAS, it costs approximately RM25,000 every single month just to stay afloat. This isn't for luxury; it covers the basics:
-
Rental & Space: Providing a safe roof for over 250+ animals.
-
Caretaker Salaries: The unsung heroes who clean, feed, and nurse animals daily.
-
Medical & Utilities: Water, electricity, and the constant need for vaccinations and emergency vet visits.
2. The Heartbreak You Don’t See
When the Bone Appetit team visited, we didn't just see animals; we saw the exhaustion in the volunteers' eyes. We saw the "Unnoticeables"—the senior dogs, the chronically ill cats, and the shy ones that don't run to the front of the cage. These are the lives that cost the most to maintain, yet are the least likely to be adopted.
One volunteer told us, "Sometimes we don’t know where next month’s rent is coming from, but we can’t stop. If we stop, who will hold them when they are scared?"
3. Why Bone Appetit is Stepping In
We started Bone Appetit to provide superior nutrition for your pets, but our mission is deeper. We believe every animal deserves dignity, whether they live in a landed home or a shelter cage. We have established a mutual agreement with New Life Animal Shelter (NLAS) to co-create purposeful content (1 Follower 1 Ringgit) aimed at amplifying local awareness for these vulnerable animals and the critical resources they require to thrive.
4. The Story of "1 Follower = 1 Ringgit": Small Actions, Big Impact
When we launched Bone Appetit, we knew we didn't want to just be another pet food company. We wanted to build a brand that had a "heartbeat." But as a new brand, we faced a challenge: How do we help a shelter that needs RM25,000 a month when we are just starting out?
The answer was our 1 Follower = 1 Ringgit campaign.
The "Why" Behind the Campaign
We pledged that every new follower on our Instagram would trigger a RM1 donation from our own pocket to the New Life Animal Shelter (NLAS) medical fund. It was our way of saying that every single person in our community—no matter how small their following has the power to provide a meal for a rescue.
The Mission Accomplished (But the Need Remains)
This specific event has officially concluded, and it served as a beautiful introduction to the 250 dogs and 30+ cats we met at the shelter. Because of those who hit 'Follow,' we were able to contribute to the medical treatments, vaccinations, and spaying/neutering surgeries that these animals desperately need.
But here is the honest truth: The campaign ended, but the number of animals at the shelter is still increasing. The RM25,000 monthly operating cost doesn't reset to zero just because a campaign is over.
